Assad gone maybe better for Palestine and the resistance in general

A new dawn of resistance may be upon us.

The fact that Baathist Syria cloaked itself in the garb of support for the struggle for pan-Arab victory over the Israeli enemy, from the 1970s on, while perpetrating some of the most horrific state crimes against its own people and others, meant that the Palestinian cause would always be tainted by this association. Now the regime has finally collapsed, that taint has been lifted and the struggle for a free Palestine, having shed its reluctant Arab support, Baathist, Gulfist and Nassarist, may have a renewal unlike any other. The pressure on the Palestinian people living within Israeli occupied territories will serve to fill the ranks of the home grown resistance and give added impetus and urgency to the cause of liberation, more out of self-preservation than ideological principle, as in fight or die.

So, thanks, I guess, Mr. Nitinyahu, you may have weakened and destroyed the already weak Arab dictatorships, but you have strengthened a newly freed people, the same ones who marched out days ago in protest over IDF occupation of their Syrian land. You see, freedom isn’t just the lack of restraints and being out of prison, it is a way of thinking about what you deserve and seeing yourself through fresh eyes. Assad’s fall hasn’t diminished Arab grass roots resistance to Israel and despotism, whether western or homegrown despotism, his fall has freed many more to be even more free to resist. I include here many of our dear Syrian cousins, in my case I have at least one Syrian familial connection, so it’s not just a figure of speech. The Levant is one big complicated prickly family saga, but we are all family, even as we hate and distrust one another, we are still family. Israel, on the other hand, is a foreign element that tries to understand us in order to defeat us, but it fails to do so time and again.

Trump will understand what I mean about foreign elements. Americans are good hard working people drawn from all over the world, but all have worked hard, or their grandparents have, to be there. Migrants who enter the US illegally, do so through the assistance of criminal enterprises, they enter the country and take jobs from hard working Americans, many of them Hispanic and as poor as the migrants are. I understand why Trump wants to build a wall to keep them and the criminal elements that assist them out, I would too. Similarly, in Palestine in the 1930s, my dad still a kid, would listen to the adults talking about the same thing, how to prevent the massive influx of illegal migrants into Palestine, those who drive their ships to the shore and run aground and just jump onto the sandy beaches and enter without anyone to stop them. These illegals became powerful and strong, so much so that they eventually threw us out, we the native people of the land became homeless and without a country. That is the danger of illegal migration and we know it well Mr President.

Back to the subject of resistance. I heard a great deal about the defeat of Hezbollah and the axis of resistance, as if this axis is some huge “death star” like mass that once destroyed along with its Darth Vader and Emperor, the evil empire and all its forces would magically collapse. I think Israel and the West in general misunderstood what resistance really is. It is not something centrally directed or controlled or tempered or brought under some kind of control. Grass roots resistance by a free people continues, true it waxes and wanes, some years are active years, others are less so as deep in secret rooms recalibration and re-strategizing goes on to define the next phase of operations. But resistance never dies. As the cause of Palestinian liberation has survived 76 years and more if we go back to the Palestinian Revolt 1936-39, it will survive 76 years more still, even 176 years and resistance will not stop.

Casual talk of peace by warmongers grates on my ears like nothing else. You want peace? You know what you need to do! But those who talk of peace really only want one thing, to lull you and me into a depressive stupor enough to infiltrate our traitor-riddled ranks and take over our states, states that can then easily sign normalization deals and peace deals with the Israeli enemy. It is for love of our people and our land and culture and traditions and our children’s futures that resistance fighters fight. Theirs isn’t a death cult obsessed with martyrdom, but a culture of life and love and freedom. Whoever they are, wherever they are, they will go on, of that I am sure, they will not stop, resistance will not end, but colonialism and occupation will end sooner than many think.

So, Merry Christmas to all and a very Happy News Year filled with pleasant surprises.
